The cultural association dotART, promoter of the Trieste Photo Days festival, launches an open call for the new editorial project Mythography, a series of collective photographic volumes freely inspired by Greek and Roman mythology through its Exhibit Around platform. Submissions to this Open Call are for free.

Selections for the first volume “Mythography I” dedicated to Mars, Saturn and Neptune, are open from 3rd March to 18th April 2021. Registration is completely free, as is participation in the project if selected.

We are looking for photographers who are interested in submitting single photos and/or projects/portfolios freely inspired by a theme of their choice among those represented by deities Mars, Saturn and Neptune:

  • Mars (God of war). Themes: war reportage, resistance.
  • Saturn (Titan of Time). Themes: historical reportage, memory, social reportage.
  • Neptune (God of the sea and earthquakes). Themes: the power of nature manifested in the four elements (fire, earth, air, water), earthquakes, tidal waves, floods, fires, natural catastrophes.

Each chapter of the book will be dedicated to a theme or divinity. Each author is free to add their own style to the works, as well as to choose the type of photography that suits them best. It is possible to submit works for more than one theme.

The great Francesco Cito, one of the best Italian photojournalists, will be a special guest of the book, in the chapter dedicated to Mars. For over forty years he has been reporting on war theatres around the world (including Afghanistan in 1980, the Gulf War in 1990, the Intifada of 1987 – 1993 and many others).

Enrico Medda, professor of Greek literature at the University of Pisa, will collaborate on the volume as scientific consultant.

The best photos and projects will be included in the volume Mythography I, which will be presented during the opening weekend of Trieste Photo Days (in late October 2021), with a conference/meeting in which Francesco Cito and Professor Medda will also take part.

» Guidelines

  • Each photographer can upload up to 20 single photos and up to 2 projects/portfolio with at least 3 to a maximum of 20 photos.
  • The photographer must specify the theme of each photo and portfolio (Mars / Neptune / Neptune)
  • We accept both colour and black and white images.
  • Projects and portfolios may be accompanied by a brief description / presentation. Exhibit Around reserves the right to modify, edit and / or not publish it. The author’s name will always be present.
  • We will select one photo that will become the cover image and the official visual of the project. We therefore invite the photographers to entitle one of the candidate photos as “Cover book”. The ideal image for the cover is evocative, it well represents the spirit of the project and contains “empty space” for the insertion of the title.
  • The photos must not contain signatures, filigrees, watermark or frames.
  • Please DO NOT upload identical photos in the Portfolio section and in the Single Photos section (for example: a Portfolio of 20 photos + the same 20 photos as 20 Single Photos). Eventually, you can upload a maximum of 1 or 2 representative photos of your portfolio also in the Single Photos section.
  • Participants will become members of the cultural association dotART for the entire 2021.

» Copyright
The submitting photographer owns the copyright to all of his images. The photographer grants the association dotART a non-exclusive right to use winning images to promote/publicize the Call.
