“Faces Of Time” – Giuliana Mariniello


Faces Of Time РGiuliana Mariniello. One of the main subjects of my personal photographic research is the urban environment, a privileged place of observation of the changes, practices and ways of representation of contemporary society which is continuously changing and transforming itself. During this research I have more and more focused my attention on detail elements, minor ephemeral signs of the city, ie the torn posters, expressing a casual and mysterious beauty, with which there has been a silent dialogue, as it often happens in photography in the relationship subject-object, which is for a me a basic philosophical aspect. My work is a contemporary revisiting of the subject of the torn posters, theme of a long photographic and artistic history which goes from Walker Evans to Jacques Villeglé, the affichistes and Mimmo Rotella and his décollages. The torn poster, destroyed by time and weather and by man (through affission and torn) constitutes in the end an icon of the urban inpermanence, a kind of palimpsest of time, whose fragments are recomposed by the photographic eye in a new sign.NB. The images, taken with an analogic camera, have not been digitally elaborated.

Giuliana Mariniello was born in Piedmont and is of Istrian origin (Porec). She has taught English Literature at the University of Naples ‘L’Orientale’ and has published several books and essays on Shakespeare, the English culture of the Renaissance, the travel literature and the intercultural relations between the East and the West. She is interested in the theoretical aspects of photography and has been carrying on a personal artistic research for several years. She has taken part in various workshops with well-known Italian and foreign photographers, including M. Ackerman, M. Botman, M. Cresci, F. Fontana, D. Kirkland, G. the Querrec and A. Webb. She has exhibited in about 40 solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad (Paris, Arles, New York, Los Angeles, Tel Aviv) and has received various awards such as the Kodak Elite Prize and the Photofolio Prix at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles. Some themes of her work are the urban landscape, the representation of the ‘feminine’ and the relationship between sacred and profane. She has curated several exhibitions (G. Berengo Gardin, F. Cito, H. Stein, C. Garc√≠a Rodero) and written articles, essays and presentations of photobooks. Her publications include, Women X Women (2011), the essay Sulla fotografia giapponese contemporanea (Naples, 2013) and Marilyn Forever (Roma, 2013). She is a member of the FIAF and in the editorial board of the magazine FOTOIT.
