PRESS RELEASE. The Canticle of the Creatures

9 April 2025

“The Canticle of the Creatures” becomes an international photography project: a visual tribute to Saint Francis of Assisi on the 800th anniversary of his most famous work.

To celebrate the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis of Assisi’s composition of The Canticle of the Creatures, Trieste Photo Days is launching an international photography project in collaboration with the Order of Friars Minor – OFM Fraternitas Foundation, the Faculty of Philosophy of the Pontifical Antonianum University, GPIC Friars Minor of Italy and Albania, with co-organization by the Municipality of Assisi.

The Canticle of the Creatures, regarded as the first poetic text of Italian literature, is a hymn to creation, universal fraternity, and respect for all forms of life. Saint Francis wrote it during a time of suffering and near blindness, transforming his pain into praise and gratitude.

Eight centuries after its creation, the photographic project “The Canticle of the Creatures” aims to reimagine these values through the language of photography. It seeks to explore the harmony of creation and the wounds caused by humanity’s disharmonious relationship with the environment. This initiative invites us to look at the world anew, rediscover the beauty around us, and recognize our responsibility toward the planet and future generations.

Enhancing the initiative, the project features photographer Dario De Dominicis, known for his impactful documentary photography. His powerful reportages—such as those covering the second most important pilgrimage in the world linked to Saint Francis, developed over four years—provide a fresh perspective that goes beyond religious themes, delving into the surrounding social dynamics.

Central to this initiative is an international open call for both professional and amateur photographers to express their own “canticle” through images inspired by the nine themes of the Canticle’s invocations. These themes include everything from the light of Brother Sun and the mystery of Sister Moon and the Stars to the power of Brother Wind, the humility of Water, the energy of Fire, and the fertility of Sister Mother Earth. The call also encompasses more intimate and spiritual reflections, such as relationships with the divine, the value of forgiveness, and universal fraternity, along with contemplations of Sister Bodily Death. This will result in a photographic narrative that combines beauty, awareness, and depth.

The selected works will be published in a photographic volume and exhibited at Palazzo Frumentario in Assisi from September 1 — World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation — until September 21, 2025. They will also be showcased at the 12th edition of Trieste Photo Days 2025 – International Photography Festival (October 24–26), that will host the official presentation of the volume and the awards ceremony for the best photographs.
