Giuseppe Ungaretti
BEYOND WORDS. Poetic explorations in the Soul of Giuseppe Ungaretti
Participants will have the opportunity to express their poetic vision by interpreting the poet's works in a personal way. The result will be a fascinating dialogue between past and present, woven through poetry and connected with photography.
The cultural associations dotART and Exhibit Around APS are launching an Open Call for poetry for the multidisciplinary project Beyond Words. This project will explore themes inspired by the poet Giuseppe Ungaretti, inviting participants to capture the vision and imagination of the poet-soldier through contemporary poetic interpretations.
The Project
The photographic and editorial project explores Ungaretti's themes through the encounter between poetry and photography and will be presented at the 12th edition of the International Photography Festival Trieste Photo Days 2025.
The poems selected by a jury of experts will enter into dialogue with the photographic project dedicated to the initiative, which aims to capture the places and experiences of the Great War experienced by Ungaretti between the Carso and Friuli Venezia Giulia, where the poet wrote some of his most famous works.
The Theme
Giuseppe Ungaretti's works address various themes, each offering different creative possibilities for poets:
- Silence and Memory: poems that capture the calm after the storm, and the light burden of memory that survives over time.
- Landscapes of the Soul: verses inspired by the natural and urban landscapes, and those that can refer to inner landscapes and memories.
- Light and Shadow: compositions that explore the dualism between hope and suffering, and the eternal between word and silence.
- The Essence of Small Things: texts that celebrate the simplicity and depth of the immediate.
- Bridges of Words: poems that explore the dialogue between cultures and the power of poetry in creating connections beyond borders.
Who is it for?
For poetry enthusiasts from around the world interested in submitting poems inspired by the poetic work of Giuseppe Ungaretti (in Italian, English, and Slovenian).
The selected poets will have the opportunity to be part of an important photographic-poetic exhibition during the 12th edition of Trieste Photo Days and to be published in the volume Beyond Words, in which photographs interact with the poems and texts by Angelo Floramo, academic, historian, medievalist, and scientific consultant for the Guarneriana Library of San Daniele del Friuli.
The Poems
Each poet is called to express their personal style, inspired by the themes and universal values of Giuseppe Ungaretti, such as memory, silence, hope, reinterpreting them in a contemporary light with personal creativity and vision.
For the poetic part, we thank the following partners: Associazione Milanofestivaletteratura, Fondazione Mario Luzi, and Erreics Onlus.
