Veronica Benedetti – Processo Speleografico (Caving Process)

Luciano Benedetti, Veronica’s grandfather, landed in caving in 1945, founding the following year the Gruppo Triestino Speleologico (Trieste Speleological Group), one of the first to operate on the Trieste Karst after the conflict. A little more than 20 years after his death, dusting off family albums, one’s gaze is caught in a diary of endeavors, the keeper of underground stories immortalized and described in the pages of newspapers of the time and by a fingerprint found on a surface. Scenarios of hidden places that cannot be spied by satellites, nor mapped or even photographed before someone has traveled them and everything they contain, before being seen, is unknown to us.
“Caving Process” is a project that reflects on layering, with memory guiding the exploration of the layers of time. Photographs, letters and memories preserve fragments of the past, allowing a connection to roots and identity. Light and darkness symbolize existential dualities leading to the discovery of buried traces, a bridge between reality and imagination manifested through a paper installation, inside a stereoscopic viewer, anaglyphs and ancient and experimental printing techniques.
