Poetry Open call

The associations Exhibit Around APS and dotART, organizers of the international photography festival Trieste Photo Days, are launching a poetic open call for the project “BEYOND WORDS. Poetic explorations into the Soul of Giuseppe Ungaretti.

The call is open to poets from all over the world. Submissions will be accepted in Italian, English, and Slovenian.

Participation is free.

Deadlines

The call is open from February 17, 2025, to March 30, 2025 April 6th, 2025.

To participate, follow these steps:

  1. Register or log in to the online submission portal at my.dotlogic.net and select the BEYOND WORDS call.
  2. Read the project description, regulations, and technical specifications for poetry submission.
  3. Follow the poetry submission procedure.
  4. Wait for a confirmation email from dotLogic to verify that your submission was successful.

Themes

Giuseppe Ungaretti’s compositions explore various themes, each offering different creative possibilities for poets:

  1. Silence and Memory – Poems that capture the calm after the storm, the echo of past experiences, and the gentle weight of memories that endure over time.
  2. Landscapes of the Soul – Verses inspired by natural and urban landscapes that shaped Ungaretti’s imagination; these may include both physical places and internal landscapes and memories.
  3. Light and Shadow – Compositions that explore the dualism between hope and suffering, the ephemeral and the eternal, words and silence.
  4. The Essence of Small Things – Texts that celebrate the simplicity and depth of the immediate.
  5. Bridges of Words – Poems that explore dialogue between cultures and shared memory, inspired by Giuseppe Ungaretti and France Prešeren, witnesses of GO! 2025, and the power of poetry in creating bonds beyond borders.

Awards

Following a careful selection process, the Best Author, Honorable Mentions, and Special Recognitions will be selected. The award ceremony will be held within the framework of Trieste Photo Days 2025. The winners will be invited to read their poetry during the exhibition presentation.

BEST AUTHOR

  • Accommodation during the award ceremony to attend the inaugural event in person.
  • SEAL created and personalized by the renowned artist Giorgio Celiberti (valued at €300).
  • Publication of the poem in the exhibition.
  • Publication of the poem in the project’s volume.
  • Publication of the poem in the Trieste Photo Days 2025 Festival Catalog.
  • A free copy of the project’s volume.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

  • Publication of the poem in the exhibition.
  • Publication of the poem in the project’s volume.

SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS

Exhibition

A jury of experts will select the best poems, which will be awarded as part of Trieste Photo Days 2025. Among the winning poems, only those awarded as Best Author and Honorable Mentions will be included in a photographic exhibition within the international framework of Trieste Photo Days 2025. The selected poems will interact with the dedicated photographic project, creating a fascinating dialogue between past and present, woven through photography and poetry.

Volume

The volume will be an original visual and poetic interweaving, composed of selected poems and the photographic project dedicated to the initiative, capturing the essence of the places connected to the poet, translating the poet-soldier’s emotions and reflections into evocative and suggestive images.

Audio-Visual Documentary

A selection of the best poems will be included in the audio-visual documentary alongside photographs and interviews with partners. The multidisciplinary documentary will be used at various levels, including schools, universities, institutions, and communities, to spread knowledge of Ungaretti’s poetry.

Selection and Costs

Participation in the call is free and includes inclusion in the book (if selected) and participation in the exhibition within the framework Trieste Photo Days 2025.

Only selected authors will be contacted by the Exhibit Around staff by September 2025.

Authors published in the book will be entitled to a special discount on the purchase of one copy of the volume (unless otherwise specified). All authors will receive a digital copy of the book in PDF format, which will be published on the Exhibit Around and Trieste Photo Days websites.

Poetry submission Guidelines

Each non-member of Exhibit Around APS can submit only one poem.
Exhibit Around APS members can submit up to 7 poems.

  • Non-members registered on my.dotlogic.net: 1 poem.
  • Photography Member: up to 2 poems.
  • Photography Enthusiast: up to 3 poems.
  • Photography Master: up to 5 poems.
  • Photography LEGEND: up to 7 poems.

Technical Specifications for Poems and Upload

  • Maximum poem length: 500 characters.
  • Format: PDF or RTF.
  • Each file must be under 1 MB.
  • File names (filename.pdf) must not contain special characters (accents, apostrophes, symbols, etc.).

How to submit Poems

To submit your poems, log in or register in our user area at my.dotlogic.net , select the open call BEYOND WORDS, and follow the submission procedure.

Update your personal information

We invite you to verify your profile on my.dotlogic.net to ensure we can contact you and promote your work. If you haven’t already, add the following details:

  • Stage name (if you prefer to be published under it).
  • Biography or CV.
  • Instagram username in the format: @username.
  • Website link.

By including these details, we will be able to highlight your name and preferred information in promoting your work!

Copyright

Each participating author declares ownership of all rights to the poems submitted for the contest and guarantees that they do not infringe on any copyright or third-party rights, releasing Exhibit Around APS and dotART from any liability related to claims or legal actions connected to the use of the poems, including copyright violations, unauthorized use of trademarks, invasion of privacy or publicity rights, defamation, violations of moral rights, or other personal or property rights in any jurisdiction.

Each author retains the moral and intellectual property rights to the submitted poems.

Each author also grants Exhibit Around APS and dotART the non-exclusive right to use the winning or selected poems for the promotion and publicity of the association’s non-profit activities in traditional print media (catalogs, industry publications, etc.), with prior official communication to the author (who will always be credited). In cases of using an author’s poem in online graphics, social networks, newsletters, and other web communication media, Exhibit Around APS and dotART commit to crediting/tagging the author with professional diligence. Please report any missing attributions to [email protected] so we can promptly address them.

ACCEPTANCE OF REGULATIONS

By registering for the contest, each participant unreservedly accepts these Regulations and assumes full responsibility for the poems submitted, releasing Exhibit Around APS and dotART from any disputes related to the poems submitted by the author.

The author also agrees that their works will remain published on the Exhibit Around and Trieste Photo Days websites indefinitely, as technical reasons make it impossible to request the removal of a work after publication.
