New free photography open call for photographers
The Double City
Explore the twin cities of the world through your lens! Capture cross-border identities and relationships and join this new free open call for photographers.
Deadline 30th June 2024
The Double City
Join us in the story of the world's dual cities and help create a global portrait of the challenges and specificities of communities living along the border. The Exhibit Around APS association is inviting photographers from all over the world to participate in this new and important open call!
The project
The Double City emerges as an important multidisciplinary photographic initiative conceived on the occasion of "GO! 2025 Nova Gorica-Gorizia European Capital of Culture".
Its goal is to explore and understand the complex realities of communities divided by borders, offering an in-depth look at the current challenges and dynamics that characterize these dual cities.
The theme
We invite photographers from all over the world to submit their photographs documenting twin cities globally. There are 36 such cities in Europe alone, each presenting a unique and diverse duality.
The theme is open to interpretation and does not require the presence of an actual border. For example, submissions can include photos that capture the coexistence of two distinct cultures within a single city (within the same borders) or photos that highlight separation due to a real boundary.
Who is it for?
Photographers from all over the world are welcome to submit single photographs and/or projects and portfolios. The participating photographers will have the opportunity to be published in the themed photographic book and to become part of an important photographic exhibition in the large international setting of the Trieste Photo Days 2024 photography festival in the presence of important special guests.
The photos
Each author will have the freedom to interpret the theme using the photographic genre that best suits their vision, from social reportage to documentary photography, from urban architecture to street photography, from portrait to creative photography, and from landscape to fine art. We look forward to exploring dual cities around the world through your unique eye!
To get inspired
Gorizia (Italy) and Nova Gorica (Slovenia): Born from the post-1947 division, their shared history, intertwined cultures, and cross-border cooperation unite them, creating a single urban area that celebrates European unity while overcoming past divisions.
Istanbul (Turkey): The city that spans two continents, Europe and Asia, divided by the Bosphorus. This unique position creates a blend of cultures, traditions, and historical influences that shape its distinctive and dynamic identity.
Montreal (Canada): A city where Anglophone and Francophone communities coexist. This linguistic and cultural duality is reflected in its institutions, education, and daily life, making Montreal a symbol of Canadian bilingualism and multiculturalism.
Tijuana (Mexico) and San Diego (USA): They form a single transborder metropolitan area. Despite the physical barrier of the border, they share integrated economies, daily migration flows, and cooperation in security, trade, culture, and infrastructure.
Brussels (Belgium): Showcases cultural and linguistic duality, hosting both Flemish and Francophone communities. This coexistence of diverse cultures and languages makes Brussels a symbol of pluralism and inclusion in Belgium.
The Double City is part of the large project "Towards GO! 2025" and is created with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region – Io Sono FVG and the partnerships with dotART Cultural Association, IN/ARCH - National Institute of Architecture Triveneto Section and the Slovenian association Društvo Humanistov Goriške (DHG).
