URBAN ANIMALS

Join us for a visual exploration of the fascinating coexistence between animals and urban spaces in our upcoming photographic project URBAN ANIMALS. Presented by dotART and Exhibit Around APS, organizers of the Trieste Photo Days international photography festival, we invite photographers from around the world to participate in this exciting open call, showcasing the unique stories of animals living alongside us in our cities.

The project

Urban ANIMALS aims to explore the fascinating intersection between the animal world and urban spaces, documenting the stories of coexistence that unfold daily in our cities. From pigeons inhabiting historic squares to cats claiming hidden corners, from pets redefining living spaces to wildlife adapting to urban life, this project seeks to showcase the diverse ways animals thrive in our cities. Following the success of previous projects such as "PLAY! Let the Game Begin" and "WOW - Worlds of Women," which garnered thousands of images from around the globe, URBAN ANIMALS will culminate in a major photographic volume and an international exhibition at Trieste Photo Days 2025.

The theme

The open call centers on the theme of URBAN ANIMALS: animals in the city, whether domesticated or far from their natural habitat, living in homes or roaming city streets. The submitted photos can explore the presence of animals in urban areas in all its forms: from real animals to their urban representations, from traces of their passage to spaces dedicated to them, to fantastical interpretations like sculptures, toys, or animal-themed installations.

Who is it for?

We’re calling photographers from around the world! Whether you have a single shot or an entire project dedicated to the animals that roam our cities—domestic, wild, or somewhere in between—we want your perspective.

Selected photographers will be part of an exciting international exhibition at Trieste Photo Days and have the chance to be featured in a prominent photographic volume, showcasing the unique and often unseen stories of animals living alongside us in urban spaces.

The photos

Each photographer is free to draw inspiration and infuse their own stylistic approach to their work, as well as to choose the type of photography that best suits them. While this open call particularly favors street photography, fine art, and documentary photography, we generally support high-quality photography that tells meaningful stories through a personal and conscious lens. Whether it’s a fleeting moment captured on the street or a long-term photographic project, we seek images that reveal the extraordinary presence of animals in the contemporary urban landscape.

URBAN ANIMALS follows the success of Exhibit Around's previous photography projects, which each year involve hundreds of photographers from around the world. After tributes to Martin Parr (Short Street Stories, 2019), to Alex Webb (Chromantic, 2020), to street photography (Tales of the Unwritten, 2021), to the female universe with Susan Meiselas (WOW - Worlds of Women, 2022), to Water with Kadir van Lohuizen (71% - The State of Water, 2023), and the project dedicated to sports (PLAY! - Let The Game Begin!, 2024), 2025 will be the year of the major photography project dedicated to the world of URBAN ANIMALS.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

The call is open to all and registration is free. To submit photos, simply register or log in to the Exhibit Around my.dotlogic.net user area, select the URBAN ANIMALS call and follow the procedure for Single Photos and/or Projects/Portfolios.

We will select the works that will be part of the prestigious dedicated exhibition and that will be published in the photographic book dedicated to the project.
