The workers’ village of Panzano was founded in 1908 by the Cosulich brothers, founders of the Triestino Naval Shipyard, to host the workers of the shipyard.
The village of Panzano was part of the model of the so-called company towns, i.e. self-sufficient urban agglomerations functional to the industrial plants spread throughout Italy since the beginning of the twentieth century, and was structured with precise architectural and urban planning characteristics that guaranteed workers and their families the essential services of cultural, recreational, commercial, sporting.
Inside the village there were schools, shops, gardens, a sports field and the so-called “yard” theater (built in 1920 and devastated by the bombings of the Second World War).
One of the main types of houses built were the workers’ houses with an “H” plan: two-storey buildings which could house up to eight houses inside, each of which was equipped with a kitchen-living room, two bedrooms, a toilet, a corridor and an independent entrance.
The areas intended for the workers’ homes were differentiated from those reserved for employees and managers, elegant villas that stood in more distant areas of the construction site.
The then employees’ hotel has now become the Europalace hotel, while the workers’ hotel is now home to the Muca Shipbuilding Museum.

Trieste’s Naval Shipyard (CNT) in Monfalcone was founded in 1908 by the Cosulich family, shipowners from the island of Lussino, initially to build ships destined for the Austrian Navigation Union. The decision to open the shipyard was motivated by the Austro-Hungarian government’s desire to promote shipbuilding in the Empire. The site chosen, in the Panzano area, was ideal thanks to the proximity of the Valentinis Canal, which guaranteed optimal conservation of the ships under construction.
