Institutional welcome and greetings, and meeting with Moreno Baccichet, landscape architect and professor of Urban Planning at the University of Udine.
9:30 am – Beginning of the route along the Canale de Dottori with a visit to the Rosta di Sagrado (Water intake) in collaboration with the CBVG Consorzio di Bonifica Venezia Giulia. Renovated between 1894 and 1905, but already present since the 16th century, the Rosta di Sagrado not only serves the town, but through the “Dottori” canal it supplies water to the entire Monfalcone area thanks to a complex network of irrigation canals. We will then continue along the suggestive cycle-pedestrian path along the Isonzo, until we reach the majestic Alimonda Castle which, built starting in 1885, was conceived not only as a stately home, but also to satisfy the growing needs linked to electrotherapy treatments, making Sagrado an important hub for such practice.
Then return to Castelvecchio and free shooting.

Subsequently, we will move towards the Villa Della Torre of Valsassina-Hofer-Hohenlohe, a magnificent example of Venetian architecture which in the past served as a hospital for untransportables, today still a witness to the soldiers’ experiences through the graffiti poetically defined as “living tears of the soldiers” present on the walls of his halls.

The Rosta di Sagrado represents an element of great importance for the Monfalcone countryside. Already in the 16th century, a structure similar to the current one existed, although built with different materials. In that period, in addition to being used for irrigation, the water taken from the Isonzo provided energy for Sagrado’s milling activity. It should be underlined that the complex network of irrigation canals, fed by the rosta, played a fundamental role in the reclamation work of the entire lower Isonzo area and continues to be extremely useful even today. In 1873 the Monfalconese Water Consortium was established, and in 1894 work began on the water intake, completed in 1905. Despite the damage suffered during the First World War, the structure of the rosta has remained substantially intact and, thanks to some restoration interventions, it has returned to being as efficient as in the past. La Rosta supplies water to the entire Monfalcone area, thanks to a system that regulates the flow it can guarantee a constant flow of water to the “Dottori” canal, with a total volume of 21.5 cubic meters per second.
Parco Ungaretti
The Ungaretti Park, the first in Italy dedicated to the poet, is a journey of memories and meditation on the first famous Ungaretti verses of Il Porto Sepolto through the places that were the scene of the terrible tragedy of the Great War of which he himself witnessed it.On the Karst plateau, the young infantryman Ungaretti, thrown into the trenches of the Carso, found in the pauses of the battles the inspiration for his essential verses which he defined as “dug into my life like an abyss” in his first collection of poems Il Porto Sepolto del 1916. The Park is a journey of history, poetry, architecture but also of art, thanks to the life-size bronze statue of the young poet-soldier created by the sculptor Paolo Annibali and the portrait of the poet in mature age, engraved on a large metal plate by Franco Dugo, while the poems placed inside the Park are taken from Life of a Man by Giuseppe Ungaretti.

Monte San Michele
The Museum of the Great War of Monte San Michele is located in the square of the mountain of the same name, not far from Cima 3 which for almost a century hosted photographic exhibitions showing the gas attack of 29 June 1916, the karst landscape during the war period and the life of soldiers in the trenches, as well as various objects including bullets, gun barrels, gas masks and personal effects. Since 29 June 2018, the Museum has been completely renovated and today offers a truly unique experience thanks to interactive multimedia tools and content (in Italian and English) capable of transmitting information and, above all, emotions. From the cartography that covers the entire conflict showing the variations of the fronts using a time bar, to the 3D reconstruction of the Third Army Gunboat and the Lukachich Cave (the latter not accessible today) up to the viewers and headphones allow visitors to have a real and own journey on the Isonzo front during the Great War, and to augmented reality to get more information on the monuments, the visit routes, the Cima 3 tunnels and the trench lines. The panoramic terrace in the square in front offers a view of the Isonzo valley and the city of Gorizia. Even today, looking at the landscape, you can understand the importance of this peak, which represented an excellent position for controlling the territory.
