The Exhibit Around APS association, in collaboration with Društvo humanistov Goriške (DHG), IN/ARCH Triveneto, and the dotART cultural association, inaugurates the multidisciplinary and action-research projectThe Double City“.

The project focuses on Gorizia and Nova Gorica, involving international artists and researchers supported by cultural experts. It aims to create a “re-imagined” community from different identities, transforming the two cities into a new cross-border center. The project specifically targets communities divided by borders, emphasizing cities that were once a single entity but are now split between two countries. There are 36 such twin cities in the European Union, each with a unique border situation.
Under the spotlight of the GO! 2025 – European Capital of Culture Nova Gorica-Gorizia 2025, “The Double City” project rethinks borders, multilingualism, and multiculturalism from an international perspective to enhance connections between local, regional, and international artists and organizations.

The main activities of the project include:

  • free international open call (17 May – 23 June) to send photographs that capture the identities and relationships along the border lines, offering a rich and nuanced vision of these places, and documenting the double cities scattered around the world, 36 of which are located in Europe.
  • artistic residency in Nova Gorica and Gorizia (25 May – 2 June) for two young Under35 photographers, the Slovenian Nik Erik Neubauer and the Italian Paul Montagnon, who will be followed by the double cities expert Tanel Rander
  • two-day photographic walk/The 24H of Photography in Gorizia and Nova Gorica, free and open to all (8 and 9 June), organized as part of PixAround FVG2024
  • photographic workshop with Massimo Siragusa “Transformations, from Italo Calvino to Richard Misrach. Landscape as a relationship” (8 and 9 June).

The activities carried out will give life to a multimedia document describing “The Double City”, composed of interviews with the partners, the Under 35s in residence, and the experts, as well as images created during the activities. There will also be photographic exhibitions, including the authorial photographic project of Massimo Siragusa, special guest of the project, and presentation events at the VIII edition of the Mesto Knjige festival and the XI edition of the Trieste Photo Days. Additionally, there will be a photographic book edited by expert photographer Vincenzo Labellarte.

“The Double City” is created with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region – Io Sono Friuli Venezia Giulia and the partnerships with Društvo humanistov Goriške (DHG), IN/Arch – Triveneto and the dotART cultural association, and under the spotlight of the GO! 2025 – European Capital of Culture Nova Gorica-Gorizia 2025.

The project also makes use of the consultancy of the architect Lucia Krasovec-Lucas, President of IN/ARCH – National Institute of Architecture Triveneto Section and Founder of AIDIA – Italian Association of Women Architects and Engineers – Trieste Section; the participation of Massimo Siragusa, photographer winner of 4 World Press Photo Awards and 3 Sony Awards, and author of over 15 books, who with his works has told the identity of many of the most prestigious international companies; Tanel Rander, well-known Estonian photographer and curator, and working since 2010 on Eastern European identity; Vincenzo Labellarte photographer and artistic counsultant of the Trieste Photo Days festival.
